#JanganKenaScam Fraud Workshop: Defend yourself, avoid being scammed

Attended by 34 media practitioners from various media houses, the #JanganKenaScam Fraud Awareness Workshop for Media Professionals was held in Menara KEN, Taman Tun Dr Ismail Kuala Lumpur on 7th March 2024.

The workshop was organised by the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) and the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM) supported by Bank Negara Malaysia.

The collaboration with Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) was a post-event initiative following the refreshed #JanganKenaScam launched on 3rd October 2023.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together media friends as allies to fight fraud as well as to educate media professionals on different fraud tactics such as online and e-commerce fraud and empower them to report such fraud effectively to protect the public. The workshop focuses on raising awareness of the various scams that target the public, for which media professionals can be the medium of information delivery to the public.

Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) Industry Taskforce chairman Dato’ John Chong, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Online Harms and Information Security Committee chairman Derek Fernandez, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) certified practitioner Lai Chee Seng and New Straits Times executive editor Sharanjit Singh among the panellist speakers.

A panel discussion with industry experts to delve deeper into specific scam tactics and red flags was also being conducted.

Among the panellist speakers were Group Chief Digital Officer Maybank, Ms Kalyani Nair, SAC Koh Seok Keng from Bukit Aman, Mr Derek Fernandez from MCMC and Managing Principal Graymatter Forensic Advisory, Mr Raymon Ram. After the panel discussion, a dedicated question-and-answer session was conducted to address media queries and concerns regarding scam reporting.
