MPI INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM FELLOWSHIP 2012

Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) is planning a four-week international training programme known as International Journalism Fellowship for young journalists from countries of the Third World, Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), Central Europe, Central Asia, Africa and ASEAN from 18th September – 15th  October 2012.

This fellowship programme is an opportunity given to young reporters below 30, who have potential and bright future in the industry to enhance their knowledge and skills in print and broadcast journalism. The training is also geared towards adapting conventional journalism to the internet environment or the new media.

MPI has invited experienced journalists/academicians/Photojournalist from China and Australian universities as speakers/lecturers. We have also received confirmations from some renowned Malaysian journalists who have agreed to contribute their knowledge and expertise.

The emphasis of the programme will be on news writing, arts of interviewing, reporting on development issues, tools for effective reporting, photo journalism, media and the law, the new media and other topics related to journalism.

Besides attending classes and completing assignments, the participants will be taken to places of interest in the states of Peninsular Malaysia to experience our rich multiracial culture and life style. The places of interest that would be included in the itinerary (tentatively) are Terengganu, hailed as Malaysia’s ‘Gem of the East Coast’ and to one of Malaysia’s premier eco-tourism destination in the northern region known as Bukit Merah Laketown Resort to experience the many wonders of nature. It surrounded by lush greenery and fronting one of Malaysia’s largest 7,000 acres fresh water lake. The resort offers a wide variety of excitement with its Water park being the main attraction, the only conservational Orang Utan Island in Peninsular Malaysia.

Towards the end of the programme, the participants will have an opportunity to visit Putrajaya, the federal administrative complex of Malaysia. We will also arrange to meet up with selected state leaders and the Minister of Information.

The course will be conducted at MPI’s training centre, away from the hustle and bustle city traffic; it offers lush greenery, tranquillity and serenity which make a perfect environment for learning.

All participants will be placed at Peninsula Residence All Suites Hotel which is just a five-minute walking distance from MPI during their one-month stay.

Eligibility

  1. Practicing Journalists (print, electronic, and new media)
  2. Not more than 30 years of age.
  3. Three years experience in journalism.
  4. Proficient in English.

FEE

Processing fee for the program:-

USD 325.00 (International Participants)

RM 1,000.00 (Local Participants)

A scholarship for each participant will be about USD8, 000.00 that covers:

i-                    Lodging at Peninsula Residence All Suites Hotel throughout the course;

ii-                  Meals: breakfast, morning/afternoon tea breaks, lunch and dinner;

iii-                Visit and tour programmes; including transportations, air fares, hotel accommodations and meals;

iv-                Training materials: notes/handouts, seminar begs/files, t-shirts, note pads etc.

Other expenses such as the return air fares (from the participant’s country of residence to Kuala Lumpur and back to his/her country), international passport/visa, pocket money etc. shall be borne by the respective participant or his/her media company.
