Journalism 2035: Preparing Future Communicators

PENANG, 19 June – Preparing students for the realities of the future media landscape was the focus of the Town Hall 2035: Will Journalists Still Exist? held at Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) today.

As future journalists, public relations practitioners, commentators, content creators and influencers, students were given the opportunity to engage directly with media industry leaders on how technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and changing audience behaviour are reshaping the communication profession.

The forum featured Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) President Datuk Yong Soo Heong, MPI Deputy President Farrah Naz Abd Karim, and MPI Council Member Azhari Muhidin, who shared their perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing media and communication professionals in the years ahead.

Among the issues discussed were the growing use of AI in content creation, the importance of media credibility, public trust, digital ethics and the skills required to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive information environment.

The speakers emphasised that while technology continues to transform the communication landscape, the ability to think critically, verify information and communicate responsibly will remain essential for future professionals.

Students actively participated in the session, raising questions on career opportunities, industry expectations and the evolving role of communicators in a rapidly changing digital world.
