Journalism Must Put Truth Before Virality – Teo Nie Ching

PUTRAJAYA, 15 June 2026 — Journalism must continue to prioritise truth over virality as the media industry faces growing pressure from social media algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI), Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said.

She said accuracy, fact-checking and integrity must remain at the core of journalism despite the demands of a fast-paced digital environment, adding that public discourse is increasingly driven by emotion rather than facts. While AI can support newsroom operations, she stressed that it cannot replace human ethics, judgement, experience and responsibility.

Teo said media organisations must strike a balance between speed and the responsibility to deliver accurate and balanced information, noting that public trust in the media takes time to build. She said this when launching the Industry Dialogue on “Balancing Virality and Responsibility: Journalism Amidst Speed, Trust and Impact”.
