10 December 2024, Jakarta – The approach to news reporting on public issues emerged as a key focus during a discussion session with Gunretiko, the leader of Sedulur Sikep on Monday, 9 December 2024. This community group has been steadfastly defending their agricultural land in Pati, Central Java, for development and industrial projects. The session highlighted the critical role of media in navigating sensitive issues while upholding journalistic integrity.
One of the primary concerns discussed was the manner in which the media covers such issues without compromising ethical standards, journalistic integrity, or introducing bias. Missteps in these areas could undermine the credibility and trustworthiness of journalism. This conversation took place during the IFJ Malaysia-Indonesia: Media Mission – Strengthening Solidarity on Media Viability, Regulation, and Rights in South East Asia, held in Jakarta from December 8 to 13, 2024.
A key feature of this program was the inclusion of the Sedulur Sikep villagers, brought to the discussion by the Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) Indonesia. Their participation shed light on the difficulties faced by communities defending their rights and the challenges journalists encounter when reporting on humanitarian issues. The villagers’ perspectives revealed the social, political, and cultural pressures that journalists must navigate while striving to produce fair and accurate reporting.
The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) observed that journalists and media practitioners must be equipped with proper training in investigative reporting, ethical standards, and unbiased storytelling. MPI emphasized the need for exposure to effective reporting techniques, particularly when covering issues related to public rights, humanitarian values, and special features that require a delicate balance of objectivity and empathy.
This second discussion session underscored the importance of capacity-building initiatives for Malaysian media professionals. Such training programs should aim to enhance their ability to report on sensitive public issues, ensuring that their work reflects transparency, accountability, and adherence to journalistic principles. Ultimately, the goal is to foster a media landscape where reporting is honest, ethical, and free from bias, thereby strengthening public trust in journalism. _ Ainol, Semarang, Indonesia.
