TIP workshop 2013: photo album

Trafficking in Persons is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons by means of threat or use force or other forms of coercion.

Women, men and children tricked into leaving by deceitful agents, transported to distant places where physical violence is frequently used to coerce then into dehumanizing work. Stripped first of their identities, then their rights, they are treated like a commodity. Once victims are trapped in the complex trafficking network, there is practically no way back. This is the scenario of Trafficking In Persons globally.

Thus, in recognition of the important role played by the media as a vehicle for disseminating information and as educationists, The Malaysian Press Institute in partnership with the United States Embassy and MAPO organizes a series of workshop on Reporting on Trafficking in Persons (TIP).

This workshop is aimed to help the journalists to understand the role of media in combating trafficking in persons, empower them to investigate and produce high quality news and articles on TIP;  helps to build the capacity of journalists to report on TIP and its trends both domestically, in the ASEAN Region, and around the world.

It not only sharpen the journalists’ skill that can successfully bring issues of human trafficking to the notice to the public and policy makers but also be able to produce reports that are accurate, relevant and compelling and avoid recreating stereotypes of victims and protect their rights

Hopefully, after this workshop journalists not only improved their quality and depth of reporting on TIP and TIP-related issues but also more efficient interface between media entities and public agencies that deal with TIP issues in Malaysia.

The first workshop was held Kuala Lumpur in 2009; the second in Kota Kinabalu in 2011.

The third TIP workshop was held in Kota Bharu, Kelantan on 19-21 February 2013.
